Kenya look to upset Senegal

Kenya are scheduled to face Senegal in their final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group C match at the 30 June Stadium in Egypt on Monday.

Kick-off is at 9:00 pm CAT.

The Harambee Stars kept their hopes of advancing to the Round of 16 are alive after they recorded their first Group C win when they defeated their East African rivals Tanzania 3-2 on Thursday.

The victory took Kenya to third place on the group standings with three points and a win over Senegal will see them book their place in the knockout phase.

Kenya head coach Sebastien Migne has explained that the pressure is on Senegal, who are one of the tournament favourites.

“I didn’t see a lot of weakness for the Senegalese team, and even if I did see a small one, I wouldn’t tell you,” Migne told Goal.

“We have no pressure, it’s only pleasure, to be there, to play against No 1 in Africa, and to start the game in a good position.”

Kashiwa Reysol striker Michael Olunga, who netted a brace against Tanzania, will be looking to find the back of the net and help his side stun the Lions of Teranga.

Meanwhile, Senegal’s hopes of reaching the knockout phase took a knock when they were defeated 1-0 by Algeria on Thursday which was their first defeat in Group C.

The defeat left the Lions of Teranga placed second on the group standings with three points and Senegal will progress to the Round of 16 if they defeat Kenya.

Senegal head coach Aliou Cisse feels that England-based midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye can help the team finish their group stage campaign with a win.

“We have to prepare well for Kenya, getting back the injured players will be very important for us,” Cisse told the media.

“I hope to have Idrissa Gana for Kenya’s match. We have to gather our strength to continue our journey.”

Liverpool FC forward Sadio Mane remains Senegal’s dangerman and he will be keen to inspire the Lions of Teranga to victory over the Harambee Stars.

In Head-to-Head stats, Kenya and Senegal have met three times and the Lions of Teranga have recorded two victories, while one match ended in a draw.

Salah on target as Egypt maintain perfect record

Egypt wrapped up a perfect record in Group A of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations by defeating Uganda 2-0 at the Cairo International Stadium on Sunday night.

The result sees the Pharaohs top the pool with a full haul of nine points and they advance into the last 16 to face a third-placed team from one of Groups C, D or E in Cairo next Saturday, July 6.

The Cranes finish in second place despite the defeat (thanks very much to a convincing win for DR Congo over Zimbabwe in the group’s other game) and will face the runners-up of Group C (likely to be either Senegal or Kenya) at the same venue on Friday, July 5.

The first shot in anger came from Uganda, with Farouk Miya cutting inside from the left and shooting toward the near post, where goalkeeper Ahmed El Shenawy had to make a decent save in the fifth minute of the match.

On 14 minutes Emmanuel Okwi threatened in a similar manner, but again his well-struck shot was plucked out of the air with relative comfort by the Egyptian gloves-man.

The Cranes continued to look the more dangerous side in attack, while the Pharaohs’ forward ambitions were hurt by an injury to Ahmed Hassan which forced the early introduction of Marwan Mohsen off the bench.

El Shenawy made another notable save just before the half-hour mark, acrobatically tipping a swerving shot from Allan Kyambadde over the crossbar, while a few minutes later he made two fine blocks in quick succession to deny Abdu Lumala.

Uganda were well on top, but against the run of play Egypt claimed the lead in the 36th minute through a superb goal from Mohamed Salah. The forward sent a beautiful strike direct from a free kick past the left hand of goalkeeper Denis Onyango.

And the Pharaohs doubled their advantage just before the interval, with a sweeping move ending with Ayman Ashraf’s low cross from the left finding Ahmed Elmohamady, who fired home a low shot on the angle to send the hosts 2-0 up.

It should have been 3-0 for the Egyptians within the opening seven minutes of the second half, as Salah went through one-on-one with Onyango, but the Liverpool star was unable to beat the on-rushing goalkeeper.

The Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper was later replaced by Robert Odongkara, as he appeared to be taken ill on the pitch. Yet it was at the other end, where Uganda were unable to take their chances, which really cost them this match.

The likes of Okwi, Miya and Kyambadde continued to either shoot off target or find El Shenawy in inspired form, with the Pharaohs able to close out a 2-0 win.

DR Congo thump eliminated Zimbabwe

DR Congo thumped Zimbabwe 4-0 in their final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group A match at the 30 June Stadium in Egypt on Sunday night.

The victory saw the Leopards finish third on the group standings and they could advance to the Round of 16 if the results in other groups go their way, while the Warriors crashed out of the tournament after finishing fourth.

The Leopards got off to a flying start as they broke the deadlock as early as the fourth minute through their target man Jonathan Bolingi.

The Belgium-based striker pounced and scored with a header from close range to make it 1-0 to DR Congo after Zimbabwe goalkeeper Elvis Chipezeze failed to hold Cedric Bakambu’s free-kick.

The Warriors grew in confidence as the match progressed, but Sunday Chidzambwa’s men were struggling to create clear-cut chances for their strikers Knowledge Musona and Khama Billiat.

DR Congo, who have won two Afcon titles, looked dangerous every time they pushed forward and they managed to double their lead five minutes after the half-hour mark.

China-based striker Bakambu raced clear and fired past Baroka FC shot-stopper Chipezeze to make it 2-0 to DR Congo with the Zimbabwe defence exposed.

Bolingi, who had opened the scoring, picked up an injury and he was replaced by Middlesbrough FC frontman Britt Assombalonga on the stroke of halftime.

DR Congo were deservedly leading 2-0 at the interval after taking their chances in the first half.

Chidzambwa introduced Nyasha Mushekwi, who is a striker by trade, seven minutes after the restart as Zimbabwe looked to pull one back.

However, the Leopards continued to attack in search of more goals and they were awarded a penalty after Bakambu was fouled by Chipezeze in the box.

Bakambu then stepped up and fired past Chipezeze, who had replaced injured George Chigova in the starting line-up, to make it 3-1 to DR Congo five minutes after the hour-mark.

It was 4-0 to DR Congo following a mistake by Chipezeze as the goal-minder fumbled the ball and Assombalonga hit the back of the net with 12 minutes left.

Zimbabwe pushed for a late consolation goal, but Tino Kadewere was brilliantly denied by goalkeeper Ley Matampi to ensure that DR Congo recorded a 4-0 victory on the night.

Zimbabwe 0

DR Congo (2) 4 (Bolingi 4, Bakambu 35′, 65′, Assombalonga 78′)

Zimbabwe: Chipezeze, Darikwa, Mhlanga, Hadebe, Pfumbidzal, Munetsi (Kadewere 70′), Phiri, Karuru, Chawapiwa (Mushekwi 52′), Musona (Mahachi 80′), Billiat.

Tanzania bid farewell to Afcon against leaders Algeria

Tanzania will bid farewell to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations when they take on Group C winnersAlgeria at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Monday.

Kick-off is at 9pm CAT.

Tanzania’s first Afcon since 1980 has not gone to plan for coach Emmanuel Amunike and his players, as they enter this final group match having already been mathematically eliminated from the tournament.

It’s do or die for most teams today as they look to secure a spot in the knockout stage.#TotalAFCON2019 pic.twitter.com/yEwp2IfzZs— SuperSport ???? (@SuperSportTV) July 1, 2019

The Taifa Stars opened their campaign with a 2-0 loss to Senegal and followed that up on Thursday night with a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to East African rivals Kenya. Amunike’s side twice led through Simon Msuva and Mbwana Samatta, but were ultimately out-fought by the Harambee Stars.

Being guaranteed to finish bottom of the group means Tanzania have only pride to fight for, but they could pick up a consolation win against an Algerian team which is likely to field a weakened line-up.

This is because the North Africans impressively defeated Senegal 1-0 on Thursday (thanks to a goal early in the second half through Youcef Belaili) and therefore secured not only a spot in the last 16, but also first place in Group C.

This gives coach Djamel Belmadi the luxury of resting key players such as Riyad Mahrez and Yacine Brahimi (among others) to ensure they are fit and fresh for a last 16 clash against a third-placed team from one of Groups A, B or F next Sunday.

In head-to-head stats, Tanzania and Algeria have met in 10 previous matches. The Fennec Foxes have claimed five wins compared to one for the Taifa Stars, while four matches have been drawn. The teams’ most recent meeting was a friendly in Algiers in March last year which the home team won 4-1.

Madagascar coach cherishes ‘dream’ upset of Nigeria

Madagascar coach Nicolas Dupuis hailed his team’s shock 2-0 Africa Cup of Nations victory over continental giants Nigeria that secured a place in the knockout rounds as a “dream” for the nation.

Goals from Lalaina Nomenjanahary and Charles Andriamatsinoro in Alexandria earned the Indian Ocean islanders a famous victory and saw Madagascar pip three-time winners Nigeria to top spot in Group B.

“I have to thank the players who made me proud and the people of Madagascar proud. It’s a real achievement for us,” said Frenchman Dupuis, who combines his role with a job at a lower-league club in his homeland.

“When I saw the group we were given we all put Nigeria as favourites. Nigeria are still a strong favourite for the tournament.”

Madagascar will face one of four best third-place finishers in the last 16 after becoming the first newcomers since Cape Verde in 2013 to survive the group stage.

“I find that the players are more and more concentrated,” said Dupuis. “But I have always played the same players and that’s going to be a major problem now.

“We’re going to have 10 of them resting at training. The main problem is that Marco (Ilaimaharitra) received a second yellow card and won’t be able to play in the next match.”

He added: “I really wanted to make the Madagascar people dream and we did but it came at a bit of a cost with all the effort we put in.”

Nigeria counterpart Gernot Rohr said he believed Madagascar were capable of creating further surprises, remarkable for a team that needed to come through a preliminary round just to reach the qualifying competition.

“You (Madagascar) can go very far now. You beat us, you beat Burundi, a team that’s not easy to beat. Anything can happen in knockout games. I think you’re capable of doing this again.”

Guinea finish third to boost last-16 hopes

Guinea claimed a 2-0 win over 10-man Burundi in a 2019 Africa Cup of Nations Group B match at the Al Salam Stadium in Cairo on Sunday evening.

The result sees the Syli Nationale end in third place in the standings with four points – a tally which may be enough to earn a place in the last 16 of the competition, depending on results in the other groups up to and including Tuesday night.

The Swallows, meanwhile, end bottom of the pool and exit their first ever Afcon with a record of three losses from as many outings.

Group B was surprisingly won by debutants Madagascar, who leapfrogged Nigeria with victory in a concurrent game in Alexandria – both teams are safely through to the last 16.

Burundi’s hopes were dealt a major blow as early as the 12th minute when left-back Christophe Nduwarugira under-hit a back pass and then pulled down Sory Kaba just outside the penalty area to prevent the Guinea forward running onto the ball.

Referee Noreddine El Jaafari believed Nduwarugira was guilty of denying a clear scoring opportunity and showed him a straight red card, reducing the Swallows to 10 men.

Despite their numerical disadvantage, Burundi very nearly opened the scoring just a few minutes later, as Pierre Kwizera hit a fierce long-range effort on target and forced Guinea goalkeeper Ibrahim Kone into a wonderful save.

Guinea capitalised on having an extra man and claimed the lead in the 25th minute. A corner kick was worked short to Francois Kamano, whose in-swinging cross was poorly cleared and allowed Mohamed Yattara to stroke home a low shot and put his side 1-0 up.

Burundi managed to see out the remainder of the half and ensure they were only a goal down at the break, but it took just seven minutes of the second half for the Syli Nationale to double their advantage.

Yattara was again the goal scorer, this time turning home a cross from Ibrahim Traore following a great passing move from the West Africans to open up their opponents’ defence.

The second goal effectively killed off the game as a contest, with Guinea safe in the knowledge that the three points were well under control and a 10-man Burundi unable to summon the energy to mount a comeback.

Madagascar stun Nigeria to advance

Madagascar stunned Nigeria 2-0 in their final 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group B match at the Alexandria Stadium in Egypt on Sunday evening.

The victory saw Barea advance to the Round of 16 as group winners, while the Super Eagles also progressed to the knockout phase as runners-up.

Barea were happy to sit back and launch quick counter-attacks against the Super Eagles in the opening stages of the encounter.

The tournament debutants managed to take a surprise lead following a mistake by John Ogu and Leon Balogun 13 minutes into the game.

Lalaina Nomenjanahary intercepted Ogu’s poor pass to Balogun and he fired past Ikechukwu Ezenwa in the Nigeria goal-posts to make it 1-0 to Madagascar.

The Super Eagles then pressed Barea as they looked to restore parity and they had an opportunity to score on the half-hour mark.

Ahmed Musa received a pass in the box and he tried to round Barea goalkeeper Melvin Adrien, who nicked the ball off the Super Eagles attacker.

Madagascar still looked dangerous when they pushed forward and they nearly scored through Faneva Andriatsima, whose effort narrowly missed the target in the 43rd minute.

The score was 1-0 to Madagascar at the interval following a lively first half.

Barea continued to attack after the restart and they were awarded a free-kick in a promising area seven minutes after the restart.

Carolus Andriamatsinoro then stepped up and beat Ezenwa with a deflected effort from the set-piece to make it 2-0 to Madagascar.

The Super Eagles then took control of the match and Wilfried Ndidi’s curling effort was saved by Adrien just before the hour-mark.

Spain-based attacker Moses Simon was introduced by Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr in the 73rd minute as the three-time Afcon champions pushed for at least two late goals.

However, Madagascar looked firm at the back in the closing stages of the match and ultimately they recorded a famous 2-0 victory over Nigeria.

Bafana in right frame for Morocco game

Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter and striker Percy Tau said the team were in high spirits and would give a good account of themselves in Monday’s crucial match against Morocco at Al Salam Stadium in Cairo, Egypt.

This last Group D AFCON match kicks off at 6pm CAT (SA, GMT+2)

Speaking to media at the pre-match press conference, coach Baxter said Morocco were a good side but added that Bafana Bafana were slowly getting into their stride and tomorrow’s match would be a great one.

“Morocco were strong against Ivory Coast, have a very experienced team and will be a tough opponent for us. But we feel that we are settling more and more into a good rhythm and we feel we can give a good game,” he said.

“The players are quite confident and the preparations have been going quite well. We were a bit late with our preparations because of some cancelled games so these games in the tournament are actually bringing us closer together to where we want to be. We are quite confident,” he added.

He said Dean Furman trained with the rest of the team on Saturday and seemed to have shrugged off his injury concern but will be further assessed on Sunday afternoon at training.

The resolute midfielder, who has been a critical figure in Bafana Bafana’s campaign, is set to play an important role in the match against Morocco if selected.

Baxter also revealed that Thami Mkhize had fully recovered from the concussion he suffered in the Namibia game towards the end of the match.

Overall, the Bafana Bafana mentor said the team was far more settled than when they got to Egypt two weeks ago.

“The team feels a bit settled. The players are believing; Dean trained on Saturday and is looking fine while Thami Mkhize’s concussion is okay,” said Baxter.

Meanwhile, Tau, who was named man of the match in the game against Namibia, said Bafana Bafana were slowly getting into rhythm and with more play, can only get better.

“We are getting to a point where with more play time and good results, we can get to where we want to be with our performance and hopefully we will get to that point,” he said.

Tau added that the team was more focused and more relaxed and that the win over Namibia was the tonic the team needed to move forward.

Kenya coach questions mental strength of Senegal

Goading an opponent is rare among Africa Cup of Nations coaches but Kenya’s Sebastien Migne did his best on Sunday to spice up the pre-match rhetoric by questioning the mental state of their next opponents Senegal.

“We know that they have never won an Africa Cup of Nations despite having the same qualities of players as the Cameroonians and Ivorians, who have already been crowned champions several times.

“For that, we have to question their mental strength,” he told a news conference on the eve of the Group C meeting between the two countries at Cairo’s 30 June Stadium on Monday.

“I hope they will not find it against us because given their qualities they can hurt,” said the Frenchman, who is taking charge in his first major tournament.

He said Senegal, among the favourites to take the title in Egypt, had struggled with the high pressing game and tough physical approach from Algeria in their last game.

Algeria won 1-0 to upset Africa’s top-ranked team and leave Senegal with three points from two games in the group, the same as Kenya.

“We have nothing to lose and everything to gain against a team of the quality of Senegal, who have players of the highest level,” added Migne.

“We will play our football with great enthusiasm and knowing that it is possible to qualify for the second round if we get the right result.”

Migne’s comments did not sit well with his counterpart Alou Cisse, who held a news conference of his own soon after.

Cisse suggested Migne might like to have a go at coaching the Senegal side before reminding him they had been “the top ranked team in Africa for a long time now and our first defeat on this continent in four years came last Thursday against Algeria”.
