Algeria best team at Cup of Nations, says Morocco’s Renard

Morocco boss Herve Renard singled out neighbours Algeria as the most impressive team at the Africa Cup of Nations heading into the knockout stages that begin on Friday in Egypt.

Both countries qualified for the last 16 after three wins from three group games, but it was the nature of Algeria’s 1-0 victory over title favourites Senegal that caught the eye of two-time title-winning coach Renard.

“I think there will be a lot of observers who will agree with me. I think up until now Algeria have been the best team at this tournament, notably in the match against Senegal where they performed very, very well,” Renard told reporters on Thursday ahead of Morocco’s tie with Benin.

“There’s speed and spontaneity, with top quality players, a world-class player in (Riyad) Mahrez, and youngsters like (Youcef) Atal and (Ismael) Bennacer who are doing a remarkable job.”

Djamel Belmadi’s Algeria meet Guinea in the last 16 on Sunday and the two North African sides could potentially square off in the final in Cairo on July 19.

“The coach (Belmadi) has succeeded in coming up with a good mixture which is not always easy in Algeria, you have to congratulate him,” continued Renard, who is attempting to guide Morocco to a first title in 43 years.

“Now from the perspective of the final, we’re only in the last 16. We’re concentrating on our match we have to play tomorrow, ensuring there are no nasty surprises.

“We’re just being ourselves and hoping we can move on to the quarterfinals which will an even harder match.”

If Morocco go on to win the title, Renard will become the first coach to guide three different teams to victory.

The Frenchman took Ivory Coast to the title in 2015, having led outsiders Zambia to a surprise victory three years earlier.

Senegal ‘keeper Mendy out for a month with hand injury

Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy will be sidelined for a month with a hand fracture sustained at the Africa Cup of Nations, his club Reims announced.

Mendy, 27, left Egypt on Tuesday to return to France for treatment on a broken left finger suffered during the warm-up ahead of Senegal’s 3-0 victory over Kenya in their final group game.

He was replaced in goal by Alfred Gomis of Italian club SPAL. Mendy’s injury comes as a big blow to a fancied Senegal side looking to win the Cup of Nations for the first time.

They face Uganda in the last 16 in Cairo on Friday, while Reims will hope to have Mendy back fit for the start of the Ligue 1 season against Marseille on August 10.

Morocco waiting for dormant lion Ziyech to roar

Hakim Ziyech dazzled as Ajax embarked on an unforgettable European run while scooping a league and cup double, but the Morocco star has yet to cast his magic over the Africa Cup of Nations ahead of Friday’s last-16 tie with Benin.

His main contribution to a flawless group campaign in Egypt was a vicious free-kick that prompted Namibia defender Itamunua Keimuine to divert into his own net and earned Morocco a 1-0 victory in their opening match.

While Herve Renard’s side triumphed in all three group games, it was primarily the result of an airtight defence and not a sputtering attack, with Youssef En-Nesyri’s fine goal against Ivory Coast a rare highlight for the Atlas Lions going forward.

Billed as one to watch, Ziyech, 26, found the going tough against compact Namibian and South African backlines, while the searing Cairo heat ensured an anticipated showdown with the Ivorians failed to ignite.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane, banned for Senegal’s first game, have scored twice already in Egypt, putting Ziyech’s reduced output in the spotlight. Against Benin he will have another chance to show he can lead Morocco, on the hunt for a first title since 1976, deep into the tournament.

‘NEXT LEVEL’ AT AJAX

“This year he took it to the next level, so we are asking him to move it up a notch at international level and we will all be with him so he can take us as far as possible,” said Renard, who is attempting to win the title with a third different country.

Dijon defender Fouad Chafik, who was overlooked for Morocco’s Cup of Nations squad, has been equally impressed by the improvement in Ziyech’s game.

“When he came in 2015 we saw his technical ability, and in terms of his shot, he was really a cut above. He’s progressed since then,” Chafik told AFP.

At Ajax, Ziyech was a chief protagonist in a Champions League adventure that saw the Dutch giants topple both holders Real Madrid and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Juventus before an agonising last-gasp defeat to Tottenham on away goals in the semifinals.

Ziyech scored in both legs of the Real upset, as Ajax trounced the 13-time champions 4-1 in Madrid, and his influential displays have marked him out as a prized asset in this summer’s transfer market.

“He’s a technical leader, the player we must take advantage of and who must help the others,” said Renard.

“He’s the one who at any moment in a match is capable of providing the spark that makes the difference.”

MISUNDERSTANDING

The fates of Ziyech and Renard are inextricably linked, with one striving to prove he is the head of the pack as the other bids for a record-equalling third title as coach, ahead of a possible departure.

Yet they initially struggled to see eye to eye. Appointed coach in February 2016, Frenchman Renard began his tenure at odds with the former Dutch youth international.

Ziyech was frozen out of the national team between January and June of 2017, his absence coinciding with the last Cup of Nations where Morocco lost narrowly to Egypt in the quarterfinals.

“I didn’t communicate enough with him. We left (with the Moroccan FA president) for Amsterdam and there after three minutes, when we started the conversation, everything was resolved,” Renard recounted to RMC Sport in April.

“He wanted to come back because he’s very attached to his national team. I needed him and I recognised my mistakes. I’m 99 percent responsible for this mistake.”

Ziyech has rewarded Renard’s renewed confidence with nine goals in 19 matches, including a brace against Zambia in the final warm-up match, but after a quiet 2018 World Cup questions still linger as to whether he can come good when it counts most.

“He’s like the rest of the team, he has to get stronger,” Renard said after the Namibia game. Will he finally deliver against Benin?

Morocco look to avoid upset against Benin

Morocco will take on Benin in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Round of 16 match at the Al Salam Stadium in Egypt on Friday.

Kick-off is at 6pm CAT.

The Atlas Lions’ hopes of clinching their second Afcon title are still alive after reaching the knockout phase as Group D winners.

Herve Renard’s men dominated the group, recording 1-0 victories over South Africa and Ivory Coast, before thumping Namibia 4-1.

Accomplished French coach Renard says they cannot afford to relax as they could be surprised in the knockout phase.

“It’s too early to speak about who will be crowned at the end,” said Renard, who is the only coach to win the Afcon title with two different countries.

“There might be surprises and we have to prepare more.”

Playmaker Hakim Ziyechi and striker Youssef En-Nesyri are Renard’s key attackers and they have the ability to inspire Morocco to victory over Benin.

Meanwhile, Benin secured their place in the knockout phase for the first time as one of the four best third-placed teams, having finished third in Group F.

The Squirrels opened their group stage campaign with a 2-2 draw with Ghana, before recording 0-0 stalemates against Guinea-Bissau and Cameroon.

Benin head coach Michel Dussuyer is looking to ensure that they extend their stay in Egypt with a win over Morocco.

“It’s a great feat to end the group undefeated. It’s a great feeling of pride,” Dussuyer said.

“There is a saying that appetite comes with eating. If we can get home as late as possible, it will be fine.”

Playmaker Stephane Sessegnon and striker Steve Mounie are Benin’s dangermen and they will be keen to play an important role in helping their side stun Morocco.

In head-to-head stats, Morocco and Benin have met on five occasions.

Morocco are undefeated against Benin, having registered five victories.

Uganda out to stun favourites Senegal

Uganda will lock horns with Senegal in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) round of 16 match at the Cairo International Stadium in Egypt on Friday.

Kick-off is at 9pm CAT.

The Cranes are set to make their maiden appearance in the knockout phase since 1978 after finishing second in Group A.

Sebastien Desabre’s men secured a 2-0 victory over DR Congo, before drawing 1-1 with Zimbabwe and they ended their group stage campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Egypt.

French coach Desabre feels that anything can happen after leading the 1978 Afcon runners-up to the knockout phase.

“We have reached the second round, which was the minimum target set for us by the national federation,” Desabre said.

“And anything can happen in knockout matches.”

Goalkeeper Denis Onyango and striker Emmanuel Okwi are Uganda’s key players and they will be keen to help their nation stun Senegal.

Meanwhile, Senegal, who are one of the tournament favourites, booked their place in the knockout stage after finishing second in Group C.

The Lions of Teranga brushed aside Tanzania 2-0, before losing 1-0 to Algeria and they secured a second-place finish after thrashing Kenya 3-0.

Senegal forward Sadio Mane has explained that Aliou Cisse’s men cannot afford to underestimate the Cranes.

“We saw the kind of football they played against Egypt,” said Mane, who is widely regarded as one of the best African footballers at the moment.

“They are a good side and we will need to be at our best to beat them.”

Mane and midfield maestro Idrissa Gana Gueye are Senegal’s key players and they will be looking to inspire the 2002 Afcon runners-up to victory over Uganda.

In head-to-head stats, Uganda and Senegal have clashed four times.

Senegal are undefeated against Uganda having recorded two victories and two draws.

Mane faces Onyango in showdown between Afcon stars

Star forward Sadio Mane goes head-to-head with star goalkeeper Denis Onyango when Senegal meet Uganda on Friday in an Africa Cup of Nations last-16 match in Cairo.

Senegalese Mane and Ugandan Onyango were included in the 2018 African Team of the Year chosen by a Confederation of African Football (Caf) panel.

They are also Champions League winners – Mane with Liverpool in Europe last season and Onyango with South African club Mamelodi Sundowns in Africa three years ago.

Mane has scored twice and missed a penalty for Senegal in two group matches after being suspended for the opening game.

“I am even ready to trade my Champions League success to win the Africa Cup of Nations,” he told France Football magazine in a pre-tournament interview.

Veteran Onyango has conceded three goals in three matches with another Liverpool star, Egyptian Mohamed Salah, among those who have scored against him.

Here, AFP Sport looks at the two last-16 matches this Friday with Senegal and Morocco expected to beat Uganda and Benin respectively.

SENEGAL v UGANDA

Senegal may top the African rankings, 58 places above Uganda, but coach Aliou Cisse has warned his star-stacked side against over-confidence.

“No one should take Uganda for granted and eliminating them will not be easy,” warned Cisse, one of the stars of the Teranga Lions team that reached the 2002 World Cup quarterfinals.

Mane echoed his coach, saying: “We saw the kind of football they played against Egypt. They are a good side and we will need to be at our best to beat them.”

Uganda had Egypt on the rack for more than half an hour before Salah scored, and were equally impressive in the second half without being able to convert chances into goals.

“We have reached the second round, which was the minimum target set for us by the national federation, and anything can happen in knockout matches,” said coach Sebastien Desabre.

BENIN v MOROCCO

Morocco have been clinical, determined and efficient so far in Egypt, mirroring the beliefs of Herve Renard, the only coach to win the Cup of Nations with two countries.

France-born Renard guided outsiders Zambia to the title in 2012 and repeated the feat with previous underachievers the Ivory Coast three years later.

“I did windows and carpets,” said Renard, referring to his job as a cleaner in Paris before turning to football.

He took Morocco to the 2017 quarterfinals in his first Cup of Nations with the Atlas Lions, and they, Algeria and Egypt won all three group matches this time.

Benin also have a French coach, Michel Dussuyer, who was embraced by his players and technical staff after taking the Squirrels beyond the first round for the first time.
